January 26, 2010 Individual Modified Stableford

Today we played an individual modified stableford and we had thirty-one (31) players. High winds and new rules on gardens took their toll on scores. Also, the tees had been moved back. While some players thought that I had done it, they were moved back by for a tournament on Sunday.

In a modified stableford, your handicap determines your target.  A gross bogey is one point, a gross par is two, a gross birdie is four and a gross eagle is eight points

This tournament was flighted and the A flight (16 players) had handicaps of 18 and under while the B flight (15 players) had handicaps of 19 and higher.

Today’s results (gross score, points over target, and points towards “player of the month” and “player of the year”) are:

A flight

1st- Aideen Kellaghan (93, -1 6points)

2nd- Michael Hawkins (86, -2, 4 points)

3rd- Norman Sklar (96, -3, 3 points)

4th- Nick Costas (89, -3, 2 points)

5th- Bryan Hopwood (91, -3, 1 point)

B flight

1st- Jerry Ardueser (90, +8, 6 points)

2nd- Ed Dobler (90, +1, 4 points)

3rd- Al Zashowski (98, +1, 3 points)

4th- Charlie Graves (98, even, 2 points)

5th- Rich Crawford (125, even, 1 point)

Ties were broken by points on the last nine (10-18), last six (13-18), last three (16-18) and last hole (18).  The top three places in each flight will be paid.

Today we had two raffle prizes.  Steve Poznanski won a certificate for Physiohealth and Nick Costas won a certificate for Dr. Pie.

The new toll road from San Jose to Caldera/Puntarenas will be open and should reduce the drive time to Puntarenas by 50 minutes.  However, because this is the high season, take the large ferry (Tambor II) and be there one hour before departure.  Here is the link for the ferry http://www.navieratambor.com/horarios-y-tarifas .

Player of the month January 2010

Sandi Wagner is the player of the month for January.  She tied Jerry Ardueser with 12 points but won the tiebreaker.  John Osorno had 7 points, followed by Aideen Kellaghan, Luis Saenz, Tony Maggio and Alonso Santa with 6 points.  The player of the month receives a free round of golf, courtesy of Valle Del Sol.  Congratulations Sandi.

Hole in one pool

The hole in one pool is frozen at $2,500.00 USD. The next person to have a “hole in one” wins that pool (multiple holes in one in the same event will split the money).  A hole in one must be on a par three hole and witnessed by all those in the foursome.  Also, the hole in one pool is only available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments and Cariari-CVGA events.  Finally, a normal par four or par five hole that has been temporarily change to a par three (due to any reason) does not qualify for the hole in one pool.

The new hole in one pool is now frozen at $2,500.00 USD and will be awarded for a hole in one after the first $2,500.00 has been paid.

The third hole in one pool is now $311.50 USD.  After all the leftover raffle prizes from 2009 have been exhausted we may start raffling off excess pool cash in our weekly tournaments.

See you on the course,

David Maddox
