GOLF QUOTE

A "gimme" can best be defined as an agreement between two golfers, neither of whom can putt very well.

January 12, 2010 Individual Stableford

Today we played an individual stableford and we had thirty-two (32) players.  The wind was incredibly high and it was very cold on the course.

In a “stableford” your handicap determines the number of strokes (if any) that you get off your gross score on each hole.  In a stableford, a net bogey is one point, a net par is two points, a net birdie is three points, a net eagle is four points and a net double eagle is five points.  If you play to your handicap, you should have 36 points (even) at the end of the round.

The A flight consisted of players with handicaps of 17 or less, while the B flight players had handicaps of 18 or higher.

Today’s results (gross, points over 36 and points towards player of the month) are:

A flight

1st- Sandi Wagner (79, +5, 6 points)

2nd- John Osorno (83, +5, 4 points)

3rd- Reinhard Sievert (82, +1, 3 points)

4th- Phil Franz (88, even, 2 points)

5th- Kylie Frederick (79, -2, 1 point)

B flight

1st- Alonso Santa (85, +5, 6 points)

2nd- Myles Cunningham (89, +4, 4 points)

3rd- Gary Luedke (89, +4, 3 points)

4th- Jim Goss (87, +4, 2 points)

5th- Alejandro Madriz (97, -1, 1 point)

Ties were broken by points on the last nine (10-18), last six (13-18), last three (16-18) and last hole (18).  The top four places in each flight will be paid.

Phil Franz won lunch at Brad’s Grille in Momentum Mall for closest to the pin on #15.

Next week is the Texas Scramble

Tuesday, January 19, is the first Texas Scramble point tournament of 2010.  The cost per player is 30 mil colones (13 mil for active monthly members).  This is the same price as November 2009 and includes green fees, all drinks on the course, long drive holes, four closest to the pin holes and the hole in one pool.  Carts and/or caddies are not included in the entry fee.

There will be an A and B flight in each Texas Scramble.  The top three teams in each flight will win prizes (each player of the winning team in each flight will be awarded a free round of golf at VDS).  Team handicaps will determine the flight you are in.  The lowest one-half of the teams will be placed in the A flight.  If we have an odd number of teams then a coin toss will determine the flight that team is placed.

Be at the course before 7 a.m.  There will be a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m.  New players, or those without a team, should come join us.  We will always have extra players looking to form new teams.  As long as you are at the course prior to 7 a.m., you will be playing in our Texas Scramble.

Here are the rules for this Texas Scramble:

Three-person teams

Two teams per hole

Five drives per player

All players hit all shots (like the old format)

15% of the combined team handicap

The handicap of the best player on the team determines the handicap of the other two players.  The limit between the best player and the others is twelve strokes.  A player with a 10 handicap can choose to play with a 24 and 30, but the 24 and 30 will be reduced to 22 and 22.

Next Derby Horse Race

Thursday, January 14, is the next Derby Horse Race at VDS.  Call VDS at 2282-9222, ext. 218 so they will know how much food to prepare.

Hole in one pool

The hole in one pool is frozen at $2,500.00 USD. The next person to have a “hole in one” wins that pool (multiple holes in one in the same event will split the money).  A hole in one must be on a par three hole and witnessed by all those in the foursome.  Also, the hole in one pool is only available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments and Cariari-CVGA events.  Finally, a normal par four or par five hole that has been temporarily change to a par three (due to any reason) does not qualify for the hole in one pool.

The new hole in one pool is now frozen at $2,500.00 USD and will be awarded for a hole in one after the first $2,500.00 has been paid.

The third hole in one pool is now $185.50 USD.  After all the leftover raffle prizes from 2009 have been exhausted we may start raffling off excess pool cash in our weekly tournaments.

See you on the course,

David Maddox
