January 05, 2010 Two-Person Best Ball

Today, the CVGA played a two-person best ball at Valle Del Sol and we had forty (40) players.  Players were able to choose their own partners but the higher handicapped player was reduced in handicap to within twelve stokes of the better player. Also, each player had to contribute three net scores per side.   The A flight (10 teams) had combined handicaps of 34 and under, while the B flight (10 teams) had combined handicaps at or above 36.

Today’s results (net and points towards player of the month and player of the year) are:

A flight

1st- Sandi Wagner and Jerry Arduesor (60, 6 points)

2nd- Jeff McLaughlin and Jason Feinman (61, 4 points)

3rd- John Osorno and Steve Poznanski (62, 3 points)

B flight

1st- Luis Saenz and Tony Maggio (59, 6 points)

2nd- Mike Wallace and Alex Gonzalez (61, 4 points)

3rd- Skip Duranczyk and Bob Macellaro (62, 3 points)

Norman Sklar won lunch at Brad’s Grille in Lindora for closest to the pin on #15.  Today we raffled two prizes left over from the year-end tournament.  Nancy Totzke won a gift certificate for Physiohealth and Steve Poznanski won a certificate for Esthetic Dental Center.

Next Cariari-CVGA event

Monday, January 11, is our next monthly tournament at the Cariari Country Club.  The format will be a modified stableford.  The cost per player is $35, which is the same rate as 2009, and the entry fee is 6 mil.  Carts and/or caddies are not included in that price.  We have to guarantee twelve non-Cariari players per tournament and tee times will begin as early as 6:30 a.m.  If you commit to playing and then do not show up, we have to pay your green fee.

The hole in one pool will be available when we play a Cariari-CVGA tournament.  Club members will be invited to join us at our regular 6 mil colones entry fee and they will be eligible for the hole in one pool.

If you want to join us, then contact me by this Saturday.  I have to provide a list of the players to the security desk at the Cariari.

Next week’s format

Tuesday, January 12, we will be playing an individual “stableford”.  In a “stableford” your handicap determines the number of strokes (if any) that you get off your gross score on each hole.  In a stableford, a net bogey is one point, a net par is two points, a net birdie is three points, a net eagle is four points and a net double eagle is five points.  If you play to your handicap, you should have 36 points at the end of the round.

You can make your own foursomes and begin play as early as 6:15 a.m.  The last group will tee off no later than 7:20 a.m.  If you are at the course before the last group goes off, you will be able to play.

Los Delfines/Playa Tambor vacation February 9-11

February 9, 10 and 11 (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) is the next CVGA golfing vacation.  I tried to keep the same rates as 2009 but I reached the following agreement with Ulrich Lang, the director of golf at Los Delfines: There has been a $30 increase (from $60 to $90) for three days of unlimited golf with cart, but Los Delfines got us a cheaper hotel rate ($60 per night double occupancy instead of $65).

Last year a golfer sharing a room with another golfer for two nights paid $190 each and this year it will cost $210 each ($20 more).

Last year a golfer with a non-golfing guest paid $320 for two nights and this year it will cost $330 ($10 more).

Last year a golfer sharing a room with another golfer for three nights paid $255 each and this year it will cost $270 each ($15 more).

Last year a golfer with a non-golfing guest paid $450 for three night and this year it will cost $450 (the same).

It’s still the best deal in Costa Rica and includes three days of unlimited golf with cart, two nights hotel at the Barcelo Tambor and all food and drinks.  Last February we had 33 players and 15 guests join us.

I am now taking reservations and will send deposit information to those interested.  Reservations are limited and golfers and golfers with guests will be given priority.  However, if you have friends or family in town that would like to join us we may be able to make an exception. And, if you want an extra night or two at the Barcelo please let me know the dates soon.

Tuesday, January 19, is first Texas Scramble of 2010

This will be a three-person scramble and for a while we are going back to the old format (where everyone hits every shot).  However, we are raising the number of drives per person from four to five.  We will still have an A and B flight, the twelve stroke rule will apply and 15% of the combined handicap will be used as a reduction.

There will be a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. (be there before 7).  Before telling you a price I need to find out if VDS is going to raise the green fees for 2010.  As of today, there was no price increase.

Hole in one pool

The hole in one pool is frozen at $2,500.00 USD. The next person to have a “hole in one” wins that pool (multiple holes in one in the same event will split the money).  A hole in one must be on a par three hole and witnessed by all those in the foursome.  Also, the hole in one pool is only available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments and Cariari-CVGA events.  Finally, a normal par four or par five hole that has been temporarily change to a par three (due to any reason) does not qualify for the hole in one pool.

The new hole in one pool is now frozen at $2,500.00 USD and will be awarded for a hole in one after the first $2,500.00 has been paid.

The third hole in one pool is now $146.50 USD.  After all the leftover raffle prizes from 2009 have been exhausted we may start raffling off excess pool cash in our weekly tournaments.

See you on the course,

David Maddox
