A "gimme" can best be defined as an agreement between two golfers, neither of whom can putt very well.

Jun 02, 2009 - Two-Person Best  Ball

Today we played a two-person best ball and we had thirty-six (36) players.  Each player played his/own ball from tee to green, using 100% of handicap.  The better net score of the two players were then circled, but each player had to contribute at least three scores per side (net ties on a hole counted for either player). The twelve stroke rule between partners was in effect.

Using the team handicaps, the tournament was flighted (one-half in the “A” and one-half in the “B” flight).  The A flight (9 teams) had combined handicaps of 38 and below while the B flight (9 teams) had combined handicaps of 40 and higher.

Today’s results (net and points towards player of the month and player of the year) are:

 A Flight

1st- Randy Scott and Ryan Donahue (60, 6 points each)

2nd- Bryan Hopwood and Dan Corcoran (61, 4 points each)

3rd- Paul Radefeld and John Snyder (61, 3 points each)

 B Flight

1st- Mike Wallace and Alex Gonzalez (58, 6 points each)

2nd- Myles Cunningham and Skip Duranczyk (58, 4 points each)

3rd- Andre Tessier and Lynne Ferguson (61, 3 points each)

Ties are broken by scores on the last nine (10-18), last six (13-18), last three (16-18) and last hole (18).  Also, only the first and second place teams in each flight will be paid.

Randy Scott won the Closest to the Pin competition on #17 today.  He received a voucher for lunch at Brad’s Grille in Lindora.

 Yesterday’s Cariari-CVGA tournament

Monday we had 16 CVGA players and 4 Cariari members play a modified stableford.  The course was in great shape and difficult as usual. Most of us then had a very nice lunch at the 19th hole.

The results are:

1st- Dan Larsen +6

2nd- Nick Costas +5

3rd- Laurie Robichaud +4

4th- Myles Cunningham +3

5th- David Maddox +3

 Next week’s format

Tuesday, June 9, we are playing stroke play using 100% of your handicap. Please be at the course no later than 7:10 a.m. The first group goes off at 6:20 a.m. and the last group goes off no later than 7:20 a.m.

 Next Derby Horse Race

Thursday, June 4, is the next Derby Horse Race at VDS.  The cost is $49 plus 5 mil entry fee.  That includes green fees, cart, range balls, lunch and two drinks.  The format is stroke play and the low net first and second place players win a voucher for VDS green fees, carts, merchandise, etc.  Then the five low net players are teamed with the five low gross players for a five hole two-person scramble (one team will be eliminated after each hole).  The winning team also wins a voucher.

VDS closed Saturday morning

The Fiesta Cup is this Saturday at VDS.  The course will be open to the public after 1 p.m. There is still space available to play in this three-person tournament.  Contact VDS at 2282-9222, ext. 218 for information.

June 16 is the Texas Scramble

Tuesday, June 16, is the fifth Texas Scramble of 2009.  The cost per player is 28 mil colones (12 mil for active monthly members). The price includes green fees, all drinks on the course, four long drive holes, four closest to the pin holes and the hole in one pool.  Carts and/or caddies are not included in the entry fee.

There will be an A and B flight in each Texas Scramble.  The top three teams in each flight will win prizes (each player of the winning team in each flight will be awarded a free round of golf at VDS).  Team handicaps will determine the flight you are in.  The lowest one-half of the teams will be placed in the A flight.  If we have an odd number of teams then a coin toss will determine the flight that team is placed.

Be at the course before 7 a.m.  There will be a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m.  We now have six radios.  The lead six-some will have one, the last six-some will have one, the cart girls will have one each and Calix and I will have one each.

New players, or those without a team, should come join us.  We will always have extra players looking to form new teams.  As long as you are at the course prior to 7 a.m., you will be playing in our Texas Scramble.

Here are the rules for Texas Scrambles in 2009:

Three person teams

 Two teams per hole

 Four drives per player

15% of the combined team handicap

The handicap of the best player on the team determines the handicap of the other two players.  The limit between the best player and the others is twelve strokes.  A player with a 10 handicap can choose to play with a 24 and 30, but the 24 and 30 will be reduced to 22 and 22.

No player can contribute two consecutive shots on a hole. However, once a ball is on the green, all three players can putt. Example- A, B and C drive off the tee and A’s drive is chosen.  A marks the spot and picks up his ball.  B and C place their ball within one scorecard of the marker and then hit the next shot.  If B or C did not make the green, then the team chooses one ball.  If B’s ball is chosen, then he marks the spot and picks up his ball.  A and C then hit the next shot.  This will be done until a ball is on the green. If a player hits a practice shot when his ball is not in play, the team receives a two stroke penalty. Once on the green, all three players can putt until the ball is holed.  Then all three players drive off the next tee and same procedure is followed.

We have done this to try to make the Texas Scrambles more competitive and fair.  Obviously, there is some strategy involved in choosing which ball to play.  However, make your decisions fast because if you get behind by one or more holes you will receive a warning, followed by a two stroke penalty.

 Hole in one pool

The hole in one pool is now frozen at $2,500.00 USD. The next person to have a “hole in one” wins that pool (multiple holes in one in the same event will split the money).  A hole in one must be on a par three hole and witnessed by all those in the foursome.  Also, the hole in one pool is only available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments and Cariari-CVGA events.

The new hole in one pool is now $1,186.50 and will be awarded to a hole in one after the $2,500.00 pool has been won.

See you on the course,

David Maddox
