Individual Stableford
Tuesday, January 13, we played an individual stableford
and we had thirty-five (35) players. In a “stableford” your handicap
determines the number of strokes (if any) that you get off your gross
score on each hole. In a stableford, a net bogey is one point, a net
par is two points, a net birdie is three points, a net eagle is four
points and a net double eagle is five points. If you play to your
handicap, you should have 36 points at the end of the round.
The A flight consisted of players with handicaps of 19
and less, while the B flight players had handicaps of 20 or higher.
Today’s results (gross, points over 36 and points towards
player of the month and player of the year) are:
A
Flight
1st- Rob White (78, +6, 6 points)
2nd- Arturo O’Connor (79, +5, 4 points)
3rd- Michael Hawkins (80, +2, 3 points)
4th- Carina Lundberg (88, +2 but lost
countback, 2 points)
5th- Mike Wallace (90, +1, 1 point)
B
Flight
1st- Mike Brechbill (92, +5, 6 points)
2nd- Larry Goldman (90, +4, 4 points)
3rd- Myles Cunningham (91 +3, 3 points)
4th- Dick MacAuley (93, +1, 2 points)
5th- Al Burgess (93, +1 but lost countback, 1
point)
Bill Hornick won lunch at the Time-Out Tavern in Escazu
for closest to the pin on #17(but he missed the birdie putt). Arturo
O’Connor won today’s raffle (golf for four at Monteran Campo de Golf).
January 20 is the first 2009 Texas Scramble
Tuesday, January 20, is the first Texas Scramble of
2009. The cost per player is 26 mil colones (12 mil for active monthly
members). The price includes green fees, all drinks on the course, four
long drive holes, four closest to the pin holes and the hole in one
pool. The players of the first place team receive a free round of golf
at VDS. The players of the second through fifth place team receive a
lunch voucher. And, in a random draw after play is completed, the
players of one team will receive a free round of golf at VDS. Carts
and/or caddies or not included in the entry fee.
Be at the course before 7 a.m. There will be a shotgun
start at 7:30 a.m. We now have six radios. The lead six-some will have
one, the last six-some will have one, the cart girls will have one each
and Calix and I will have one each.
Calix will be checking to see if there is slow play. If
there is, one warning will be given. After that, it is a two stroke
penalty to the two teams that could not keep up.
New players or those without a team should come join
us. We will have extra players, looking to form new teams. As long as
you are at the course prior to 7 a.m., you will be playing in our Texas
Scramble.
Here
are the new rules for Texas Scrambles in 2009:
Three
person teams
Two
teams per hole
Four
drives per player
15%
of the combined team handicap
The
handicap of the best player on the team determines the handicap of the
other two players.
The limit between the best player and the others is twelve strokes. A
player with a 10 handicap can choose to play with a 24 and 30, but the
24 and 30 will be reduced to 22 and 22.
No
player can contribute two consecutive shots on a hole.
However, once a ball is on the green, all three players can putt.
Example- A, B and C drive off the tee and A’s drive is
chosen. A marks the spot and picks up his ball. B and C
place their ball within one scorecard of the marker and then hit the
next shot. If B or C did not make the green, then the team
chooses one ball. If B’s ball is chosen, then he marks the spot
and picks up his ball. A and C then hit the next shot. This
will be done until a ball is on the green. If a player hits a
practice shot when his ball is not in play, the team receives a two
stroke penalty. Once on the green, all three players can putt until
the ball is holed. Then all three players drive off the next tee and
same procedure is followed.
We have done this to try to make the Texas Scrambles
more competitive and fair. Obviously, there is some strategy involved
in choosing which ball to play. However, make
your decisions fast because if you get behind by one or more holes you
will receive a warning, followed by a two stroke penalty.
Mike Daughtry is going to enter the results on a excel
spreadsheet. If we see a problem with the 15% of team handicap then we
will adjust it and give you the new percentage before the next
tournament.
Los
Delfines, Playa Tambor in February
Our next trip to Playa Tambor is Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday, February 17, 18 and 19. We have thirty rooms reserved.
The cost per player is $180 and includes two
night’s room (double occupancy), tax, tip, all food and drinks at
the Barcelo Playa Tambor. It also includes three days golf (with
cart) at Los Delfines. If you have a non-golfing guest the cost is
an additional $120, and if you want a private room there will be an
additional $50 charge. Transportation is not included.
Should anyone want to spend Thursday at the Barcelo, we
also have 15 rooms reserved for that night. The additional cost $60 per
person (double occupancy) or $85 for a single room. However, golf on
Friday is not included. If you want to play golf on Friday, you can pay
the discounted green fee at the course.
Late this week, I will start taking reservations for
this trip. Rather than taking cash, I will provide you with a Scotia
account number so that you deposit the money into that account. You can
then email me with the amount deposited and transaction number.

Hole
in one pool
The hole in one pool is now $2,431.00 USD. The next
person to have a “hole in one” wins that pool (multiple holes in one in
the same event will split the money).
A hole in one must be on a par three hole and witnessed
by all those in the foursome. Also, the hole in one pool is only
available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments.
See you on the course,
David Maddox
