May 27, 2008 - Individual Modified Stableford

Today, we played an individual modified stableford and we had twenty-six (26) players.  Four inches rain over the last three days, and fog and drizzle today, was weather fit for only a duck.  However, twenty-six mighty ducks played and all but one finished.

In a modified stableford, each player plays his/her own ball from tee to green.  The handicap of the player determines his/her “target”, and the player’s gross score on each hole determines the number of points he/she receives.  The “target” is 36 minus the player’s handicap.  However, the minimum target of players that have handicaps of 32 or higher is five.  The points awarded for gross scores on each hole are: one for bogey, two for par, four for birdie and eight for eagle.  If you play to your handicap, you should be even at the end of your round.

This tournament was flighted and one-half of the players present were placed in each flight.  The A flight (13 players) had handicaps of 17 or less, while the B flight (13 players) had handicaps of 18 or higher.

Today’s results (gross, stableford points over target, and points toward POTM and POTY) are:

A Flight

 1st- Agustin Odio (73, +10, 6 points)

2nd- Reinhard Sievert (81, +10 but lost tiebreaker, 4 points)

3rd- Jeff McLaughlin (84, +7, 3 points)

4th- Michael Hawkins (77, +5, 2 points)

5th- Mark Sandoval (80, +4, 1 point)

Others: +4 but lost tiebreaker to -6

B Flight

 1st- John Kendall (86, +10, 6 points)

2nd- Luis Diego Guardia (95, +5, 4 points)

3rd- Jerry Haws (100, +4, 3 points)

4th- Adi Tarkay (98, +4 but lost tiebreaker, 2 points)

5th- Dick MacAuley (95, +3, 1 point)

Others:  +3 but lost tiebreak to –3 and one DNF (duck not finish)

Normally, we pay five places in each flight.  However, because of the low turnout, only three places in each flight will be paid today.

 Next week’s format

Tuesday, June 3, we will be playing a two-person scramble, using 30% of the team handicap as a reduction of your gross score.  Using the team handicaps, the tournament will be flighted (one-half in the “A” and one-half in the “B” flight).

You may choose your own partner but he/she must be within twelve strokes of the lower handicap player (or the higher handicap player will be adjusted downward to within twelve strokes).  Each player must contribute three drives per side.  Please remember that the scramble rules have changed.  The person whose ball is selected must play that ball first, as it lies on the course.  The partner may then place his/her ball within one scorecard, but must remain in the same cut of grass (no going from fringe to green or rough to fairway).

The first group will tee off at 6:20 a.m. and the last will tee off no later than 7:20 a.m. If you are at the course before the last group goes off, you will be allowed to play.  Come join us.

 Hole in one pool

Today, twenty-three players were in the pool and there were no holes in one.  The pool for next week is now $902.50 SD.  A hole in one must be on a par three hole and witnessed by all those in the foursome.  Also, the hole in one pool is only available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments.

Player of the Month, May 2008

Reinhard Sievert is the POTM for May 2008.  He had ten points.  Also, with ten points was Luis Diego Guardia, followed by Jeff McLaughlin with nine points.  Luis and Reinhart tied on the number of total points for the month (10) and tied on the number of individual points for the month (4).  The next tiebreaker was previous POTM awards but neither had one (the POTM list is on the leaderboard page at www.TheCVGA.com). Therefore, seniority with the CVGA was the ultimate tiebreaker.

The player of the month receives a free round of golf, compliments of Valle Del Sol.  Congratulations, Reinhard.

 2008 Fiesta Cup tournament

This year’s Fiesta Cup tournament is June 6, 7 and 8.  This will be a three-person event and the cost per person is $300.00 USD.  Friday, June 6, is the Calcutta at the Fiesta Casino in Alajuela (lots of food and drinks included).  Saturday, June 7, is a best ball format (using the best two scores) at Valle del Sol.  Sunday, June 8, is a three-person scramble at the Cariari Country Club.  Sunday evening is the awards banquet and raffle at the Fiesta Casino in Alajuela.

See you on the course,

David Maddox
