May 20, 2008 - Two-Person Best Ball

Today’s format for the Central Valley Golf Association was a two-person best ball and we had thirty-six (36) players. In our best ball format, each player plays his/her own ball from tee to green, using 100% of his/her handicap as a reduction on each hole (if applicable).  The better net score of the two partners is recorded on each hole. In this format, players were able to choose their own partner, but the twelve-stroke rule was in effect.  This tournament was flighted.  The A flight (nine teams) had combined handicaps of 32 or less, while the B flight (also nine teams) had combined handicaps of 35 or more.

Today’s results (net score and points for POTM and POTY) are:

 A Flight

1st- Reinhard Sievert and Robert Hudson  (58, 6 points each)

2nd- Jorge Alencastro and Larry Goldman (61, 4 points each)

3rd- Ficklin Bryant and Barry Ashworth (62, 3 points each)

Others: 62 but lost the tiebreaker, to 66

B Flight

1st- Lars Carlson and Luis Diego (60, 6 points each)

2nd- Bill Jones and Gary Luedke (62, 4 points each)

3rd- Skip Duranczyk and Bob Macellaro (63, 3 points each)

Others: 63 but lost the tiebreaker, to 65

Los Suenos on Thursday, May 29

We have six tee times (space for 24 players) on Thursday, May 29, beginning at 8 a.m.  If you would like to attend, send me an email or call me at 2254-0140 or 8392-8595, and then pay the green fee by Tuesday, May 27.

The cost is $85.00 per player for unlimited golf and cart for the day and lunch is included. I have to collect the money prior to noon on Tuesday, May 27, and then let Los Suenos know how many of those tee times we will need.

Next week’s format

Tuesday, May 27, we will be playing an individual modified stableford.  This is an excellent format for our new and/or higher handicap players. You can have some high scores on several holes, but still play well enough to compete and win.

In a modified stableford, your handicap determines your target.  A gross bogey is one point, a gross par is two, a gross birdie is four and a gross eagle is eight points.  Once you have a gross double-bogey, you cannot score a point on that hole.  You can pick up, or finish the hole (as long as you are not slow playing).  If you are a 20 handicap then your target is 16 points (36-20=16).  If, at the end of the round, you have 14 points then your score is –2 (and that’s not good).  If you have 23 points then you are +7 (and that is great).  This tournament will be flighted and the top five scores in each flight will receive points towards player of the month and player of the year.  All new players that have less than three tournament scores will be frozen at +3 points.

Please be there by 7 a.m.  Since this is an individual competition you are free to make your own foursome.  The first group will go of #1 at 6:20 a.m. and the last team will go off no later than 7:20 a.m.

 Player of the month standings

Next week’s tournament will decide the POTM for May.  Carlson has nine points (but will be out of the country), followed by McLaughlin, Wallace, Paulie, Page, Diego and Sievert with six points.  Seven others have four points.  The POTM receives a free round of golf, compliments of VDS.

2008 Fiesta Cup tournament

This year’s Fiesta Cup tournament is June 6, 7 and 8.  This will be a three-person event and the cost per person is $300.00 USD.  Friday, June 6, is the Calcutta at the Fiesta Casino in Alajuela (lot’s of food and drinks included).  Saturday, June 7, is a best ball format (using the best two scores) at Valle del Sol.  Sunday, June 8, is a three-person scramble at the Cariari Country Club.  Sunday evening is the awards banquet and raffle at the Fiesta Casino in Alajuela.  This is an incredible event and each year I have been a participant.  However, with my broken hand, I will not be playing this year (my loss).

Hole in one pool

Today, we had 35 players in the pool and there were no holes in one.  The pool for next week is now $868.00 USD.  A hole in one must be on a par three hole and witnessed by all those in the foursome.  Also, the hole in one pool is only available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments.

See you on the course,

David Maddox
