Two-person scramble
Today, we played a two-person
scramble and we had forty-two (42) players. Our players were able to
choose their own partners in this competition and 30% of
the team handicap was used as a reduction off their gross scores. If
the handicap difference between the two players was greater than twelve
strokes, the higher handicapped player was lowered. Using the team
handicaps, the tournament was flighted (one-half in the “A” and one-half
in the “B” flight). The A flight (10 teams) were 8.7 and below, while
the B flight (11 teams) were 10.2 or higher. The odd two-some was
placed in the B flight by a flip of a coin and would not have placed in
either flight.
Today’s results
(gross, net and points towards POTM and POTY) are:
A Flight
1st-
Jeff McLaughlin and Mike Wallace (68, -13.3, 6 points each)
2nd- Rob
Lowther and Adi Tarkay (64, -13.1, 4 points each)
3rd-
Ariel Zapata and Joe “Choa” Thompson (69, -11.4, 3 points each)
Others: -9.5 to
–4.7
B Flight
1st-
Paulie Gurciullo and Bruce Page (73, -10.7, 6 points each)
2nd- John
Snyder and Myles Cunningham (75, -9.0, 4 points each)
3rd-
Bryan Hopwood and Lars Carlson (75, -7.2, 3 points each)
Others: -6.2 to
+3.2
Winning today’s
closest to the pin contest (hole #15) was Dick MacAuley. Last week’s
winner was JEFF MCLAUGHLIN (I forgot to mention him in last week’s
update). Congratulations Dick and JEFF.
Next
week’s format
Tuesday, May 13, is
the fourth Texas Scramble of 2008. This will be a three-person
scramble, requiring FIVE drives per player. There will be a shotgun
start at 7:30 a.m., but you must be there before 7 a.m.
The cost per person
is 22 mil (9 mil for players who pay a monthly green fee to Valle Del
Sol). That price will remain in effect for all of 2008 and includes
green fees, drinks on the course, four “long drive” holes (and one for
the ladies), four “closest to the pin” holes, and the “hole in one
pool”. Carts and caddies are not included. After the tournament, there
will be an “all you eat buffet” (at your cost) at Rock & Roll Pollo in
Santa Ana.
As in all Texas
Scrambles, two three-person teams will tee off on each hole and
scorecards will be exchanged. It will be up to the opposing teams to
insure that all rules, drops and number of drives per person are met,
and that the gross scores are properly recorded.
Also, we have
changed some rules for the Texas Scrambles and they are explained later
in this email and are also explained in the “team rules and starting
hole” sheet that will be given to each team on Tuesday. On the back of
that sheet are rules in Spanish for your caddies to read.
If you are not on
an established team, please come anyway. We are going to have a lot of
extra players, looking to form teams. If you are at the course before 7
a.m., you will be able to play. If we have an odd number of players, we
will have one two-person or one four-person team. If you have any
questions, please call me at 2254-0140 or 8392-8595.
Changes to
scrambles, modified best ball, shambles and Texas Scrambles
As of January 8, we
began using a “one scorecard rule” in all select shot team events. And,
the player of the ball that is selected will ALWAYS play first, as the
ball lies (be it in a divot or goose crap), unless USGA or local rules
provide relief. The other players must place their ball within “one CVGA
or VDS scorecard length”, no closer to the hole. Play continues in this
manner until a ball is holed. In Texas Scrambles, 10% of the combined
handicap of the team members will be used as a reduction.
If a ball is in the
trap, the player who hit the ball into the trap hits first. The other
players can then rake the trap before placing the ball in the trap. A
ball on the green can be lifted, cleaned and placed on the green by the
person who put it on the green and that person must putt first.
Remember, there are rules about embedded balls, ant beds, young trees
(less than the height of a driver), garden areas, etc. that can provide
you with relief. It is your responsibility to know the rules. If you
are in doubt, play two balls on that hole and we will rule on it after
play is completed.
Tournaments you
want to play next week
About two years
ago, I recommended a tournament to our players that turned out to be
really crappy. They were sponsors of ours and I believed that
tournament would be nice. It wasn’t, I was really embarrassed and I got
rid off them as sponsors.
Since then, I have
done “due diligence” before recommending tournaments to you. There are
two very nice charity tournaments next week that I am going to encourage
you to play. Each serves a very worthy cause, each will most certainly
fill up soon, CVGA players are organizing each, and each has some very
nice raffle prizes. If you can, please try to play both of these
tournaments.
Friday, May 16, is
the Copa Panama Faco tournament at the Cariari Country Club. This will
be a three-person scramble and the cost per player is $125.00. There
will be a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. and carts are not included. There
will be a lunch and raffle after the tournament. Contact Jetzy
(8391-0257), Mariana (8380-2542) or Agustin (8382-8722) for more
information.
Sunday, May 18, is
the Escazu Rotary Club “Hermanas de Magdala” tournament at Valle Del
Sol. This will be a two-person best ball format and the cost per player
is $100.00. Bernhard Croci is organizing this tournament (8876-1931)
and the entry fee includes cart, driving range, lunch and many raffle
prizes also.
Anagolf National
Pairs tournament, May 23-25
This year’s
National Pairs tournament will be held at the Cariari Country Club.
Last year, it was a 36-hole event (and my partner and I won our
flight). In 2008, it will be a 54-hole event, with a different format
on each day. There will be five flights and the cost is $100 per player
to enter this three-day tournament. That price includes green fees for
all three days, trophies, and lunch on the final day. The first day
will be best ball, the second day will be alternate shot and the final
day will be stroke play.
Contact Anagolf at
2296-5772 or visit
www.anagolf.com for more details.
Hole
in one pool
Today, all
forty-two players entered the pool and there were no holes in one. The
pool for next week is now $739.00 USD. A hole in one must be on a par
three hole and witnessed by all those in the foursome. Also, the hole
in one pool is only available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments.
See you on the course,
David Maddox
