March 04, 2008 - Two-Person
Scramble
Today, we played a two-person scramble and we had
fifty-six (56) players. Our players were able to choose their own
partners in this competition and 30% of the team handicap was used as a
reduction off their gross scores. If the handicap difference between
the two players was greater than twelve strokes, the higher handicapped
player was lowered. Using the team handicaps, the tournament was
flighted (one-half in the “A” and one-half in the “B” flight). The A
flight (14 teams) were 9.6 and below, while the B flight (14 teams) were
9.9 or higher.
Today’s results (gross, net and points towards
POTM and POTY) are:
A flight
1st- Agustin Odio and Jason Davison (67,
-14.0, 6 points each)
2nd- Svein Steinmoen and Phil Franz (69,
-12.0, 4 points each)
3rd- Ariel Zapata and Joe “Chou”
Thompson (68, -11.8, 3 points each)
Others: -11.1 to –1.0
B flight
1st- Bob Zepik and Cris Wall (68,
-17.8, 6 points each)
2nd- Julio Petra and Juan Carlos Rojas
(73, -11.0, 4 points each)
3rd- Bill Lessley and Bruce Kniegge (75,
-8.4, 3 points each)
Others: -8.2 to –2.9
The teams of Odio/Davison and Zapata/Thompson had
their handicaps reduced to meet the twelve-stroke rule, but still played
well enough to win. Two teams (Bob Sims/Bill Holter and Rob
White/Enrique Gamboa) had the low gross of the day (66). Bob Zepik had
big-hitter Cris Wall as a partner and they clobbered the B flight.
Formats for the next three weeks
I have to return to Texas for one more operation
on my wrist. Calix and Mike Daughtry will be running the tournaments
for the next three weeks. Here are the formats:
Tuesday, March 11- individual stableford
Tuesday, March 18- individual “modified”
stableford (the minimum target is raised to five points for handicappers
32, 33, 34, 35 and 36)
Tuesday, March 25- individual stableford
If you are not familiar with these formats, please
logon to
www.TheCVGA.com and visit the “games we play” page.
While I am gone, I will not be able to send out
results and/or format updates. However, Mike Daughtry has our mailing
list and will be sending out an email on the results.
Also, I owe several of you some money from the
last few tournaments (but you did not play and get paid today). Calix
would prefer not to have to deal with payments, so I will give Calix a
list of all players that have money coming to them. If you are on the
list, you will not have to pay the 5 mil entry fee for next week. I am
scheduled to return on Monday, March 24, and will try to make the March
25 tournament and pay you the balance. Thanks.
Damas Isrealitas charity tournament this Friday
Friday, March 7, is a three-person scramble at the
Cariari Country Club. There is a shotgun at 7:30 a.m. and the cost is
$100 per person. This includes breakfast, green fees, lunch and a great
raffle. There are only 15 spaces left.
You can sign up by calling Maureen at 382-1573
(this is the correct number for her). If you are interested but don’t
have a team, Mike Daughtry wants to put together a team. Call him at
228-9305.
VDS closed this Friday
The course will be closed until about 1:30 p.m.
this Friday (March 7) for a private tournament.
Hole in one pool
Today, we had 54 players in the pool and there
were no holes in one. The hole in one pool is now frozen at $2,500.00
USD and the next person to have a “hole in one” wins that pool (multiple
holes in one in the same event will split the money).
The pool for the week after our next hole in one
is now $100.00 USD. A hole in one must be on a par three hole and
witnessed by all those in the foursome. Also, the hole in one pool is
only available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments.
Tuesday, April 1, is the Texas Scramble
Tuesday, April 1, is the third Texas Scramble of
2008. This will be a three-person scramble, requiring FIVE drives per
player. There will be a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m., but you must be
there before 7 a.m.
The cost per person is 22 mil (9 mil per person
for current monthly members of Valle Del Sol). That price includes
green fees, drinks on the course, four “long drive” holes (and one for
the ladies), four “closest to the pin” holes, and the “hole in one
pool”. Carts and caddies are not included. After the tournament, there
will be an “all you eat buffet” (at your cost) at Rock & Roll Pollo in
Santa Ana.
If you are not on an established team, please come
anyway. We are going to have a lot of extra players, looking to form
teams. If you are at the course before 7 a.m., you will be able to
play. If we have an odd number of players, we will have one two-person
or one four-person team. If you have any questions, please call me at
254-0140 or 392-8595.
Changes to scrambles, modified best ball,
shambles and Texas Scrambles
We are now using a “one scorecard rule” in all
team events. And, the player of the ball that is selected will ALWAYS
play first, as the ball lies (be it in a divot or in goose crap), unless
USGA or local rules provide relief. The other players must place their
ball within “one CVGA or VDS scorecard length”, no closer to the hole.
Play continues in this manner until a ball is holed. We have also
reduced the team handicap in this and all future Texas Scrambles. Ten
percent of the combined handicap of the team members will be used as a
reduction. Two person scrambles will remain at 30% of the combined
handicap.
See you on the course (in a couple of weeks),
David Maddox
