June 24, 2008 - CVGA Texas Scramble

Today, the Central Valley Golf Association played a three-person Texas Scramble and we had eighteen teams.  After rain and overcast yesterday, this morning looked rather gloomy.  However, the weather today was very nice and cool.

In today’s event, two opposing teams played together to insure that the rules were followed, the minimum numbers of drives per player (five) were met, and the proper scores were recorded.

Net scores ranged from –14.6 to –2.9, and the best gross scores were one –11, one –8, and three –7’s.

Today’s results (gross, net, and points towards team of the year) are:

1st- Big Easy (-11, -14.6, 150 points)

2nd- Chau (-7, -14.0, 90 points)

3rd- Time-Out Tavern (-8, -13.9, 80 points)

4th- Cuban Boys (-7, -10.8, 70 points)

5th- Alencastro (-5, -10.8 but lost tiebreaker, 60 points)

6th- Dos Perros (-7, -10.1, 50 points)

7th- Mac’s American (-3, -9.9, 40 points)

8th- Fiesta Casino (-6, -9.4, 30 points)

9th- Los Ultimo (-5, -9.0, 20 points)

10th- Kevin’s Transfer (-4, -8.8, 10 points)

All other teams received ten points towards “team of the year”.  Each member of the first place team was awarded a free round of golf, compliments of Valle Del Sol.  Each member of the second place team received a voucher for an Executive Lunch, compliments of Tony Romas.  The third, fourth and fifth place teams also received a voucher for a free lunch at one of our sponsors (Big Dog’s, Wendy’s, Mac’s American Bar, Time-Out, and/or Tequila Joe’s).

The players on the Big Easy were Rob White, Enrique Gamboa and Steven Choi.  Team Chau was Joe Thompson, Jason Davidson and Mike Lucas.  Paulie Gurciullo, John Kendall and Bruce Page represented the TIME-Out Tavern.  The Cuban Boys are Roberto Veitia, Saadat Awan and Arturo Napoles, and Team Alencastro was a three-some of extra players (George Alencastro, Bill Sheridan and Rick Rochester).  Congratulations to the winning teams.

Next week’s format

Tuesday, July 1, we will be playing an individual modified stableford.  I will be on a fishing trip, so Norman Sklar will start the tournament and Mike Daughtry will be collecting the scorecards at the end of the round.

In a modified stableford, your handicap determines your target.  A gross bogey is one point, a gross par is two, a gross birdie is four and a gross eagle is eight points.  Once you have a gross double-bogey, you cannot score a point on that hole.  You can pick up, or finish the hole (as long as you are not slow playing).  If you are a 20 handicap then your target is 16 points (36-20=16).    This tournament will be flighted and the top five scores in each flight will receive points towards player of the month.  All new players that have less than three tournament scores will be frozen at +3 points.

Please be there by 7 a.m.  Since this is an individual competition you are free to make your own foursome.  The first group will go of #1 at 6:15 and the last team will go off no later than 7:20 a.m.

 Hole in one pool

Today, all players were automatically entered in the pool.  There were no holes in one.  The pool for next week is now $1,121.50 USD.  A hole in one must be on a par three hole and witnessed by all those in the foursome.  Multiple holes in one in the same event will split the money and the pool is only available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments.

Copa Valle Del Sol

July 12 and 13 (Saturday and Sunday) is the Copa Valle Del Sol. The cost is $200.00 and includes green fees, cart, breakfast, drinks and food on the course for both days.  Sunday there will be a lunch afterwards.  The format for each day will be stroke play (using 80% of your handicap) and there will be three flights with trophies and prizes in each.  Also, the overall low net player wins six months of free golf at Valle Del Sol.

This is a really nice tournament (many of us played it last year) and all of our regular players will be receiving an invitation.  However, no Tico Time here.  If you want to play, sign up soon.  After next week, invitations will be going out to non-CVGA and non-Valle Del Sol regulars.  This tournament should fill up fast.

See you on the course,

David Maddox
