Individual Modified
Stableford
Today, we played an
individual modified stableford and we had thirty-two (32) players.
In a modified
stableford, each player plays his/her own ball from tee to green. The
handicap of the player determines his/her “target”, and the player’s
gross score on each hole determines the number of points he/she
receives. The “target” is 36 minus the player’s handicap. However, the
minimum target of players that have handicaps of 32 or higher is five.
The points awarded for gross scores on each hole are: one for bogey, two
for par, four for birdie and eight for eagle. If you play to your
handicap, you should be even at the end of your round.
This tournament was
flighted and one-half of the players present were placed in each
flight. The A flight (16 players) had handicaps of 16 or less, while
the B flight (16 players) had handicaps of 17 or higher.
Today’s results
(gross, stableford points over target, and points toward POTM and POTY)
are:
A Flight
1st-
George Alencastro (78, +7, 6 points)
2nd-
Bernhard Croci (84, +6, 4 points)
3rd- Rob
White (80, +5, 3 points)
4th-
Ficklin Bryant (80, +4, 2 points)
5th-
Sandi Wagner (82, +3, 1 point)
Others: +3 but lost
tiebreaker, to -6
B Flight
1st- Bob
Macellaro (92, +6, 6 points)
2nd-
Paulie Gurciullo (86, +5, 4 points)
3rd-
Andee Daughtry (110, +5 but lost tiebreaker, 3 points)
4th-
Myles Cunningham (91, +4, 2 points)
5th- Bill
Sheridan (88, +3F, 1 point)
Others: +3F but
lost tiebreaker, to –8
Normally, we pay
five places in each flight. However, because of the low turnout, only
four places in each flight will be paid today. Also, new players with
less than three tournament scores were frozen to +3.
Next week’s
format is the Texas Scramble
Tuesday, June 24,
is the fifth Texas Scramble of 2008. This will be a three-person
scramble, requiring FIVE drives per player. There will be a shotgun
start at 7:30 a.m., but you must be there before 7 a.m.
The cost per person
is 22 mil (9 mil for players who pay a monthly green fee to Valle Del
Sol). That price will remain in effect for all of 2008 and includes
green fees, drinks on the course, four “long drive” holes (and one for
the ladies), four “closest to the pin” holes, and the “hole in one
pool”. Carts and caddies are not included and tents will not be allowed
on the course.
As in all Texas
Scrambles, two three-person teams will tee off on each hole and
scorecards will be exchanged. It will be up to the opposing teams to
insure that all rules, drops and number of drives per person are met,
and that the gross scores are properly recorded.
Also, we have
changed some rules for the Texas Scrambles and they are explained in the
“team rules and starting hole” sheet that will be given to each team on
Tuesday. On the back of that sheet are rules in Spanish for your
caddies to read.
If you are not on
an established team, please come anyway. We are going to have a lot of
extra players, looking to form teams. If you are at the course before 7
a.m., you will be able to play. If we have an odd number of players, we
will have one two-person or one four-person team. If you have any
questions, please call me at 2254-0140 or 8392-8595.
Are you on the
web site?
During the last
Texas Scramble Steve Budrys took hundreds of photos (and not just of the
drink girls). If you played, then you are probably in the slideshow.

Player of the
Month, June 2008
Paulie Gurciullo is
the POTM for June 2008. He had fourteen points. Reinhard Sievert was
second with ten points and John Kendall was third with eight. The player
of the month receives a free round of golf, compliments of Valle Del
Sol. Congratulations, Paulie.
Hole
in one pool
The pool for next
week is now $1,043.50 USD. A hole in one must be on a par three hole
and witnessed by all those in the foursome. Also, the hole in one pool
is only available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments.
Copa
Valle Del Sol
July 12 and 13
(Saturday and Sunday) is the Copa Valle Del Sol. The cost is $200.00 and
includes green fees, cart, breakfast, drinks and food on the course for
both days. Sunday there will be a lunch afterwards. The format for
each day will be stroke play (using 80% of your handicap) and there will
be three flights with trophies and prizes in each. Also, the overall
low net player wins six months of free golf at Valle Del Sol.
This is a really
nice tournament (many of us played it last year) and all of our regular
players will be receiving an invitation. However, no Tico Time here.
If you want to play, sign up soon. After next week, invitations will be
going out to non-CVGA and non-Valle Del Sol regulars. This tournament
should fill up fast.
See you on the course,
David Maddox
