June 10, 2008 - Two-Person Chapman

Today, we played a two-person Chapman and we had twenty-six (26) players.   Our players were able to choose their own partners in this competition and 30% of the team handicap was used as a reduction off their gross scores.  If the handicap difference between the two players was greater than twelve strokes, the higher handicapped player was lowered. Using the team handicaps, the tournament was flighted (one-half in the “A” and one-half in the “B” flight).  The A flight (6 teams) were 8.7 and below, while the B flight (7 teams) were 9.6 or higher. The placing of the extra team in the B flight was determined by chance.

Today’s results (gross, net and points towards POTM and POTY) are:

A Flight

1st- Mike Daughtry and Reinhard Sievert (76, -3.5, 6 points each)

2nd- Fabrizio Poletti and Gustavo Camperos (78, -1.5, 4 points each)

3rd- Gregg Hurd and Mark Fairman (76, -1.4, 3 points each)

 Others:  +.8 to +3.6

B Flight

1st- Paulie Gurciullo and Bruce Page (83, -1.0, 6 points each)

2nd- Rob White and Brian O’Leary (81, -.6, 4 points each)

3rd- Bryan Hopwood and John Kendall (86, +3.2, 3 points each)

 Others: +5.4 to +12.3

Because of the low turnout today, only the first and second place teams in each flight will be paid.  Heavy rain over the past few days, coupled with the degree of difficulty of this format presents, many players stayed home today.  Next week’s tournament will be much simpler.

Sandi Wagner won closest to the pin today on hole #7 and Norman deposited another ball in Lake Sklar (hole #7).

Monday, June 16, we play Cariari

Once again, the Cariari Country Club has graciously invited us to play their very fine course.  I have five tee times for Monday, June 16, beginning at 7 a.m.  The cost per player is $60.00 USD.  As always, I have to guarantee the number of players, so I will need to collect the money in advance.

The Cariari is a private course and we are fortunate for this invitation.  All players will be on time, dress properly, respect their rules and members, and there will be no slow play.  Send me an email or call me at 8392-8595 if you would like to join us.

Any Cariari members wishing to join us are welcome and will receive credit toward the minimum of eight tournaments for our year-end raffle. The entry fee is 4 mil colones (no hole in one pool) and the format will be an individual stableford.  As always, there will be a regular CVGA tournament on Tuesday.

 Next week’s format

Tuesday, February 5, we will be playing an individual modified stableford.  In a modified stableford, your handicap determines your target.  A gross bogey is one point, a gross par is two, a gross birdie is four and a gross eagle is eight points.  Once you have a gross double-bogey, you cannot score a point on that hole.  You can pick up, or finish the hole (as long as you are not slow playing).  If you are a 20 handicap then your target is 16 points (36-20=16).    This tournament will be flighted and the top five scores in each flight will receive points towards player of the month.  All new players that have less than three tournament scores will be frozen at +3 points.  The minimum target for players with handicaps higher than 32 will be four points.

Since this is an individual competition you are free to make your own foursome.  The first group will go of #1 at 6:15 and the last team will go off no later than 7:20 a.m.

 Player of the Month standings

Paulie Gurciullo and Reinhard Sievert have ten points, followed by John Kendall with eight.  Six others are tied with six points.

FYI, ninety-one different players have points this year.  To see the top twenty point leaders for 2008, check the Leaderboard page of www.TheCVGA.com .

Tuesday, June 24, is the Texas Scramble

Tuesday, June 24, is the fifth Texas Scramble of 2008.  This will be a three-person scramble, requiring FIVE drives per player.  There will be a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m., but you must be there before 7 a.m.

The cost per person is 22 mil (9 mil for players who pay a monthly green fee to Valle Del Sol).  That price will remain in effect for all of 2008 and includes green fees, drinks on the course, four “long drive” holes (and one for the ladies), four “closest to the pin” holes, and the “hole in one pool”.  Carts and caddies are not included and tents will not be allowed on the course.

As in all Texas Scrambles, two three-person teams will tee off on each hole and scorecards will be exchanged.  It will be up to the opposing teams to insure that all rules, drops and number of drives per person are met, and that the gross scores are properly recorded.

Also, we have changed some rules for the Texas Scrambles and they are explained later in this email and are also explained in the “team rules and starting hole” sheet that will be given to each team on Tuesday.  On the back of that sheet are rules in Spanish for your caddies to read.

If you are not on an established team, please come anyway.  We are going to have a lot of extra players, looking to form teams.  If you are at the course before 7 a.m., you will be able to play.  If we have an odd number of players, we will have one two-person or one four-person team.  If you have any questions, please call me at 2254-0140 or 8392-8595.

 Hole in one pool

Today, we had 25 players in the pool and there were no holes in one.  The pool for next week is now $1,000.00 USD.  A hole in one must be on a par three hole and witnessed by all those in the foursome.  Also, the hole in one pool is only available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments.

See you on the course,

David Maddox
