July 1, 2008 - Individual Modified Stableford

Today, we played an individual modified stableford and we had thirty-four (34) players.  In a modified stableford, each player plays his/her own ball from tee to green.  The handicap of the player determines his/her “target”, and the player’s gross score on each hole determines the number of points he/she receives.  The “target” is 36 minus the player’s handicap.  However, the minimum target of players that have handicaps of 32 or higher is five.  The points awarded for gross scores on each hole are: one for bogey, two for par, four for birdie and eight for eagle.  If you play to your handicap, you should be even at the end of your round.

This tournament was flighted and one-half of the players present were placed in each flight.  The A flight (17 players) had handicaps of 17 or less, while the B flight (17 players) had handicaps of 18 or higher.

Today’s results (gross, stableford points over target, and points toward POTM and POTY) are:

 A Flight

 1st- Mike Hawkins (78, +9, 6 points)

2nd- Randy Scott (80, +8, 4 points)

3rd- Reinhard Sievert (79, +7, 3 points)

4th- Mark Sandoval (81, +4, 2 points)

5th- Rob White (79, +3, 1 point)

Others: +3 but lost tiebreaker to -4

B Flight

 1st- Bruce Page (90, +8, 6 points)

2nd- Adi Tarkay (91, +7, 4 points)

3rd- Mark Driscoll (88, +6, 3 points)

4th- Myles Cunningham (91, +6 but lost tiebreaker, 2 points)

5th- Ryan Donahue (95, +6 but lost tiebreaker, 1 point)

Others:  +7 but frozen at +3 to –4 and one DNF

Normally, we pay five places in each flight.  However, because of the low turnout, only four places in each flight will be paid today.

 Next week’s format

Tuesday, July 8, we will be playing a two-person scramble, using 30% of the team handicap as a reduction of your gross score.  Using the team handicaps, the tournament will be flighted (one-half in the “A” and one-half in the “B” flight).

You may choose your own partner but he/she must be within twelve strokes of the lower handicap player (or the higher handicap player will be adjusted downward to within twelve strokes).  Each player must contribute three drives per side.  Please remember that the scramble rules have changed.  The person whose ball is selected must play that ball first, as it lies on the course.  The partner may then place his/her ball within one scorecard, but must remain in the same cut of grass (no going from fringe to green or rough to fairway).

The first group will tee off at 6:20 a.m. and the last will tee off no later than 7:20 a.m. If you are at the course before the last group goes off, you will be allowed to play.  Come join us.

 Hole in one pool

The pool for next week is now $1,169.50 SD.  A hole in one must be on a par three hole and witnessed by all those in the foursome.  Also, the hole in one pool is only available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments.

Copa Valle Del Sol

July 12 and 13 (Saturday and Sunday) is the Copa Valle Del Sol. The cost is $200.00 and includes green fees, cart, breakfast, drinks and food on the course for both days.  Sunday, there will be a lunch afterwards.  The format for each day will be stroke play (using 80% of your handicap) and there will be three flights with trophies and prizes in each.  Also, the overall low net player wins six months of free golf at Valle Del Sol.

This is a really nice tournament (many of us played it last year) and all of our regular players will be receiving an invitation.  If you want to play, sign up soon.  Valle Del Sol is our home course and it would really be nice if the CVGA had a strong presence in this tournament.

Guanacaste Classic

Another great tournament you may want to play is the Guanacaste Classic. It will be held on July 26 and 27 at Reserva Conchal and Hacienda Pinilla.  The cost is $250.00 and will be stroke play.  Saturday will be played at Conchal and Sunday will be at Pinilla.  Friday, July 25, you can have a practice round at either course for only $50.00.  If you stay over Sunday night, you can play either course for $20.00 on Monday.

Call Conchal at 2654-4123 for more information.

See you on the course,

David Maddox
