January 29, 2008 - Stroke Medal
Play
Today, we had
forty-five (45) players who played a stroke play format, using 100% of
their handicap as a reduction. The weather was beautiful and there was
very little wind.
Today’s tournament
was flighted and we had 22 “A” players (handicaps 15 and under) and 23
“B” players (handicaps 16 and over).
Today’s results (low
net and points toward POTM and POTY) are:
A Flight, front

Mike Hawkins (30, 3 points)
2nd- Greg

Under our normal
point system, the points awarded in each flight for “player of the
month” and “player of the year” are:
1st- 6
points
2nd- 4
points
3rd- 3
points
4th- 2
points (depending on the number of players)
5th- 1
point (depending on the number of players)
However, in stroke
play, the points awarded in each flight for front nine low net, back
nine low net and overall low net are:
1st- 3
points
2nd- 2
points
3rd- 1
point
To determine the
number of points you earned for POTM and POTY during the stroke play
format, add the points posted on each side (front, back and overall). If
you win all three sides, you will be awarded nine (9) points.
Next week’s
format
Tuesday, February
5, we will be playing an individual modified stableford. I have to go
back to Texas for a checkup on my wrist, so Calix will be running the
tournament.
In a modified
stableford, your handicap determines your target. A gross bogey is one
point, a gross par is two, a gross birdie is four and a gross eagle is
eight points. Once you have a gross double-bogey, you cannot score a
point on that hole. You can pick up, or finish the hole (as long as you
are not slow playing). If you are a 20 handicap then your target is 16
points (36-20=16). This tournament will be flighted and the top five
scores in each flight will receive points towards player of the month.
All new players that have less than three tournament scores will be
frozen at +3 points.
Please be there by
7 a.m. Since this is an individual competition you are free to make
your own foursome. The first group will go of #1 at 6:15 and the last
team will go off no later than 7:20 a.m.
CVGA plays
Cariari on February 11
The Board of
Directors of the Cariari Country Club has graciously invited us to play
their fine course on Monday, February 11, 2008. I have six tee times
(for up to twenty-four players) beginning at 6:40 a.m. The cost per
player is $60 and that does not include cart and/or caddie. The Cariari
requires that each walking player have a caddie and that each cart (with
two players) has one caddie.
The Cariari is a
private course and we are very privileged to received this invitation.
And, we may be able to have a regular monthly tournament there in the
future. It would be nice to an interclub challenge between the Cariari
and Valle Del Sol on a regular basis. However, before then, we would
need a lot of practice at their course before we could truly compete.
I have guaranteed
the Board that we will play at a reasonable speed, that we will respect
their members, and that we will follow their rules and dress code. If
you don’t think that you can walk the course and keep up with the group
in front of you, please rent a cart. If you don’t think that you can
respect their members and their rules, then please do not sign up to
play on the 11th.
There will be an
entry fee of four mil colones and the format will probably be a
stableford. However, to insure our home course attendance doesn’t
suffer, we may make this a two-day competition. Any players not playing
on Monday would still be able to play and compete on Tuesday in a
separate pool (I need to work out the details).
Player of the
month results
Dick MacAuley is
the Player of the Month for January 2008. Dick had eleven points,
followed by Skip Duranczyk with nine points, Reinhart Sievert with eight
points and Bill Holter with seven points. Six others had six points.
The POTM receives a free round of golf, compliments of Valle Del Sol.
Congratulations, Dick. Your handicap is being cut.
Hole in one pool
Forty-two players
were in the pool today and the new pool is now $2,146.00 USD. A hole in
one must be on a par three hole and witnessed by all those in the
foursome. Also, the hole in one pool is only available in our Valle Del
Sol tournaments.
Los Suenos on
February 28
February is a very
busy month at Los Suenos, but I have reserved six tee times (space for
24 players) on Thursday, February 28, beginning at 8 a.m. If you would
like to attend, start making plans now.
The cost is $85.00
per player for unlimited golf and cart for the day and lunch is
included. I will need to collect the money prior to noon on Tuesday,
February 26, and then let Los Suenos know how many of those tee times we
will need.
Our arrangement
with Los Suenos is a very good deal and we cannot abuse it. This price
is only good for the CVGA members during scheduled tournaments with Los
Suenos. And, as with most golf courses, you will be provided with an
ice chest only if you purchase (from them) some drinks for consumption
on the course.
See you on the course,
David Maddox
