January 15, 2008 - Two Person Stableford

Today we played a two-person stableford and we had fifty-two (52) players in attendance.  We also had our first “hole in one” during CVGA competition in eighteen months.  Congratulations to Adi Tarkay for his ace on #17.  Adi wins the hole in one pool of $2,500.00 USD.

The format we played today is new to our club and there were no restrictions as to the handicap of your partner.  Both net scores and points counted.

In a “stableford” your handicap determines the number of strokes (if any) that you get off your gross score on each hole. A ten handicap gets to reduce his gross by one stroke on the ten most difficult holes.  An eighteen handicap gets to reduce his gross by one stroke on all eighteen holes.  A thirty handicap gets to reduce his gross by two strokes on the twelve most difficult holes and by one stroke on all other holes.  A thirty-six handicap would get two strokes off every hole.

In a stableford, a net bogey is one point, a net par is two points, a net birdie is three points, a net eagle is four points and a net double eagle is five points.  The number of points your team has at the end of play will determine the winners.  If you play to your handicap, you should have 36 points at the end of the round. If you and your partner play to your respective handicaps, your team should have 72 points at the end of the round.

The combined handicaps of the teams ranged from 9 to 62.  There were twenty-six teams and the A flight (13 teams) had team handicaps from 9 to 33 and the B flight (13 teams) had handicaps from 35 to 62.

Today’s results (stableford points over 72 and points for POTM and POTY) are:

 A Flight

1st- Svein Steinmoen and Phil Franz (+5, 6 points each)

2nd- Reinhard Sievert and Jake Jacobson (+4, 4 points each)

3rd- Bill Holter and Bob Sims (+1, 3 points each)

Others: +1 but lost tiebreaker to –6 and one DQ

B Flight

1st- Bernhard Croci and Verena Croci (+16, 6 points each)

2nd- Lynne Ferguson and Leila Mant (+7, 4 points each)

3rd- Albert Burgess and Dick MacAuley (+2, 3 points each)

Others:  +2 but lost tiebreaker to –16

Obviously, Bernhard and Verena had a banner day.  Bernhard shot an 82 and Verena was not far behind with an 86.  Lynne Ferguson had a personal best also (42 on front nine).  Arturo O’Connor shot a 79, with 44 points, but his partner failed him and their team score was +1 (tied for 3rd, but lost tiebreaker).  All scores from today will be added to the handicap program and there will be some changes (up and down) for some players next week.

Next week’s format

Tuesday, January 22, we will be playing a two-person best ball.  In this format, each player plays his/her own ball from tee to green, using 100% of his/her handicap as a reduction on each hole (if applicable).  The better net score of the two partners is recorded on each hole.   Players can choose their own partner, but the twelve-stroke rule is in effect.  This tournament will be flighted and the first group will go off #1 at 6:15 a.m.  The last group will go off no later than 7:15 and all players arriving before then will be allowed to join us.

Hole in one pool

Today, Adi Tarkay had his very first “hole in one” and won the pool of $2,500.00.  Adi used a 52-degree wedge on # 17, a 125-yard par three hole.  CVGA players Rob Lowther, Jim Wall and Jerry Haws witnessed his ace, as well as one caddie.

All players today were in the pool and the new pool is now $2,005.00 USD.  A hole in one must be on a par three hole and witnessed by all those in the foursome.  Also, the hole in one pool is only available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments.

 See you on the course,

David Maddox
