GOLF QUOTE

A "gimme" can best be defined as an agreement between two golfers, neither of whom can putt very well.

January 8, 2008 - CVGA Texas Scramble

Today, the Central Valley Golf Association played a three-person Texas Scramble and we had seven-eight (78) players and three guests join us.  Each player on a team had to contribute five drives and ten percent of the team’s handicap was used as a reduction. The weather was windy and cold but the course was dry and everyone seemed to have a good time.

In today’s event, two opposing teams played together to insure that the rules were followed, the minimum numbers of drives per player were met, and the proper scores were recorded.  This format also allows players to meet and play with others, and it allows us to put more players on the front nine starting holes.

We have new beverage girls and they had to learn the course.  Some players were not served as well as I had wished, but the next tournament should be better.

I also need to apologize for the mistake on the cost of the tournament.  I had incorrectly stated the cost of the tournament would be 20 mil per player (9 mil for monthly members). Calix caught my mistake (VDS raised their rates and the Costa Rican government devalued the U.S. dollar), so I had to raise the entry fee to 21 mil per player (9 mil for monthly members).

Net scores ranged from –15.3 to –2.4, and the best gross scores were  –13, -11, -9, -6 and several –5’s.

Today’s results (gross, net, and points towards team of the year) are:

 1st- Tag Team (-13, -15.3, 150 points)

2nd- Kick-Ass Coffee (-11, -12.4, 90 points)

3rd- Scrap Iron (-9, -10.7, 80 points)

4th- Red Dolphin Marine (-6, -10.2, 70 points)

5th- Team J.R. (-5, -9.9, 60 points)

6th- Cuban Boys (-5, -9.2, 50 points)

7th- Golfitos (-3, -9.2, 40 points)

8th- Banditos (-5, -8.9, 30 points)

9th- Los Calvos (-4, -8.8, 20 points)

10th- Magic (-446, -8.8, 10 points)

All other teams received ten points towards “team of the year”.  Each member of the first place team was awarded a free round of golf, compliments of Valle Del Sol.  Each member of the second place team received a voucher for an Executive Lunch, compliments of Tony Romas.  The third, fourth and fifth place teams also received a voucher for a free lunch at one of our sponsors (Big Dog’s, Wendy’s, Mac’s American Bar, Time-Out, Tequila Joe’s and/or Rock & Roll Pollo).

Los Suenos, Thursday, January 17

Thursday, January 17, will be our first trip to Los Suenos since July 2007.  I have five tee times, beginning at 8 a.m. and the cost per person is $85.00 USD or 43 mil in colones.  That price is higher than last year, but so is everything else in Costa Rica.  However, just as last year, we will have unlimited golf and cart for the day, and lunch after our tournament.

I need to collect the money prior to noon on Tuesday, January 15, and then let Los Suenos know how many of those five tee times we will need.  Call me (254-0140 or 392-8595) or send me an email soon.

Our arrangement with Los Suenos is a very good deal and we cannot abuse it.  This price is only good for the CVGA members during scheduled tournaments with Los Suenos.  And, as with most golf courses, you will be provided with an ice chest only if you purchase (from them) some drinks for consumption on the course.

Next week’s format

Tuesday, January 15, we will be playing a two-person stableford.  This is a new format.  You can pick your own partner and there are no restrictions as to the handicap of your partner.  Both net scores will count.

In a “stableford” your handicap determines the number of strokes (if any) that you get off your gross score on each hole. A ten handicap gets to reduce his gross by one stroke on the ten most difficult holes.  An eighteen handicap gets to reduce his gross by one stroke on all eighteen holes.  A thirty handicap gets to reduce his gross by two strokes on the twelve most difficult holes and by one stroke on all other holes.  A thirty-six handicap would get two strokes off every hole.  The handicap of each hole is clearly marked on the CVGA scorecards.

In a stableford, a net bogey is one point, a net par is two points, a net birdie is three points, a net eagle is four points and a net double eagle is five points.  The number of points your team has at the end of play will determine the winners.  If you play to your handicap, you should have 36 points at the end of the round. If you and your partner play to your respective handicaps, your team should have 72 points at the end of the round.

This new format should assist me in more accurately handicapping our players. Play will begin as early as 6:30 a.m.  The last group will tee off no later than 7:20 a.m.  If you are at the course before the last group goes off, you will be able to play.

Photo’s of the Year-End Texas Scramble

Beginning tomorrow, we will have a slide show of photographs on the home page of our website (www.TheCVGA.com).  Click on the link just below our logo.  Steven Budrys put this together for us and he did a fine job.

 Anagolf senior tournament

Friday, January 25, is the first senior tournament of 2008.  It will be held at the Cariari Country Club.  Check with Anagolf (296-5772 or www.anagolf.com) for the price and start time.

“Have a heart” tournament

Thursday, February 14, 2008 is the annual “Have a heart” charity tournament at Pinilla Golf Course.  It will be a four-person scramble with a shotgun start at 7:30 and the cost pp is $125.00. The entry fee includes cart, green fees, lunch and raffle.  Call Barry Lawson at 653-0270 or Pinilla at 680-7000 for more information.

Hole in one pool

Today, all players were automatically entered in the pool and we had no holes in one. The hole in one pool is frozen at $2,500.00 and the next person to have a hole in one wins that pool (multiple holes in one in the same event will split the money).

The pool for the week after our next hole in one has now grown to $1,927.00 USD.  A hole in one must be on a par three hole and witnessed by all those in the foursome.  Also, the hole in one pool is only available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments.

See you on the course,

David Maddox
