A "gimme" can best be defined as an agreement between two golfers, neither of whom can putt very well.

January 2, 2008 - Two Person Scramble

Today, we played a two-person scramble and we had thirty-eight (38) players.   Our players were able to choose their own partners in this competition and 30% of the team handicap was used as a reduction off their gross scores.  Using the team handicaps, the tournament was flighted (one-half in the “A” and one-half in the “B” flight).  The A flight (9 teams) were 11.4 and below, while the B flight (10 teams) were 11.7 or higher.

Today’s results (gross, net and points towards POTM and POTY) are:

A Flight

1st- Mike Daughtry and Bob Zepik (72, -9.0, 6 points each)

2nd- Bill Holter and Bob Sims (66, -9.0 but lost tiebreaker on the back nine, 4 points each)

3rd- Mike Hawkins and Nick Costas (71, -7.9, 3 points each)

B Flight

1st- John Snyder and Myles Cunningham (72, -12.3, 6 points each)

2nd- Patrick Corrigan and John Leggio (76, -7.7, 4 points each)

3rd- Joe Thompson and Jason Davison (79, -7.4, 3 points each)

Format for Tuesday, January 8, is the Texas Scramble

Tuesday, January 8, is the first Texas Scramble of 2008.  This will be a three-person scramble, requiring FIVE drives per player.  There will be a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m., but you must be there before 7 a.m.

Valle Del Sol has raised all of their rates, so our new cost per person is 20 mil (9 mil for monthly members).  That price includes green fees, drinks on the course, four “long drive” holes (and one for the ladies), four “closest to the pin” holes, and the “hole in one pool”.  Carts and caddies are not included.  After the tournament, there will be an “all you eat buffet” (at your cost) at Rock & Roll Pollo in Santa Ana.

As in all Texas Scrambles, two three-person teams will tee off on each hole and scorecards will be exchanged.  It will be up to the opposing teams to insure that all rules, drops and number of drives per person are met, and that the gross scores are properly recorded.

If you are not on an established team, please come anyway.  We are going to have a lot of extra players, looking to form teams.  If you are at the course before 7 a.m., you will be able to play.  If we have an odd number of players, we will have one two-person or one four-person team.  If you have any questions, please call me at 254-0140 or 392-8595.

Changes to scrambles, modified best ball, shambles and Texas Scrambles

Beginning January 8, we will be using a “one scorecard rule” in all team events.  And, the player of the ball that is selected will ALWAYS play first, as the ball lies (be it in a divot or in goose crap), unless USGA or local rules provide relief. The other players must place their ball within “one CVGA or VDS scorecard length”, no closer to the hole.  Play continues in this manner until a ball is holed.  We have also reduced the team handicap in this and all future Texas Scrambles.  Ten percent of the combined handicap of the team members will be used as a reduction.  Two person scrambles will remain at 30% of the combined handicap.

Hole in one pool

The hole in one pool is frozen at $2,500.00 and the next person to have a “hole in one” wins that pool (multiple holes in one in the same event will split the money).

Today, all players were entered in the pool and there were no holes in one.  The pool for the week after our next hole in one is now $ 1,814.50 USD.  A hole in one must be on a par three hole and witnessed by all those in the foursome.  Also, the hole in one pool is only available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments.

 See you on the course,

 David Maddox
