February 26, 2008 - Two-Person Modified Best Ball

Today, the Central Valley Golf Association played a two-person modified best ball and we had sixty (60) players.  That is the most ever for a regular Tuesday format. Normally, we pay three places in each flight, but today we paid four.

A modified best ball is three formats in one, using 30% of the team’s handicap as a reduction.  The first six holes are a scramble, requiring a minimum of two drives per player.  The second six holes are best ball, and the final six holes are a Chapman (alternate shot) format.  Players were able to choose their own partner, but the twelve-stroke rule was in effect.  This tournament was flighted.  The A flight (15 teams) had team handicaps of 10.8 or less, while the B flight (also 15 teams) had team handicaps of 11.1 or more.

Today’s results (gross, net and points for POTM and POTY) are:

A Flight

1st- Rob Lowther and Adi Tarkay (70, -8.6, 6 points each)

2nd- Bob Sims and Bill Holter (69, -5.4, 4 points each)

3rd- Mike Hawkins and Nick Costas (74, -4.9, 3 points each)

4th- Enrique Gamboa and Bill Hornick (74, -4.6, 2 points each)

 Others: -4.3 to +2.8

B Flight

1st- Norman Mena and Wilfredo Castro (73, -10.1, 6 points each)

2nd- John Snyder and Myles Cunningham (77, -8.6, 4 points each)

3rd- Ken Totzke and Nancy Totzke (78, -8.1, 3 points each)

4th- Bob Zepik and Ben Haas (80, -7.0, 2 points each)

Others: -3.9 to +11.0

Enrique Gamboa won the closest to the pin on #5 (free lunch) and Randy Scott won the closest to the pin on #7 (gift certificate at Lindora Golf and Tenis).

Player of the Month for February 2008

Norman Mena is the POTM for February 2008.  Norman had ten points; Bob Sims had eight points, followed by five others with six points.  The POTM receives a free round of golf, compliments of Valle Del Sol.  Congratulations Norman.

Damas Isrealitas tournament on March 7

There will be a charity tournament on Friday, March 7, at the Cariari Country Club.  The format is a three-person scramble, there will be a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m., and the cost per player is $100 USD.  A hole in one on a selected hole wins a Land Rover.

I have spoken with the sponsors and I believe this will be a very nice tournament.  Breakfast will be served by Bagelman’s and there will be a lunch and raffle following the tournament.  Raffle prizes include Continental Airline tickets, hotel and golf at the Four Seasons, hotel and golf at Reserva Conchal, and dinners at very nice restaurants.

Contact damasisrealitas@gmail.com, call Maureen at 392-1573 or contact the Cariari at 293-3211 if you want to play.

Next week’s format

Tuesday, March 4, we will be playing a two-person scramble, using 30% of the team handicap as a reduction of your gross score.  Using the team handicaps, the tournament will be flighted (one-half in the “A” and one-half in the “B” flight).

You may choose your own partner but he/she must be within twelve strokes of the lower handicap player (or the higher handicap player will be adjusted downward to within twelve strokes).  Each player must contribute three drives per side.  Please remember that the scramble rules have changed.  The person whose ball is selected must play that ball first, as it lies on the course.  The partner may then place his/her ball within one scorecard, but must remain in the same cut of grass (no going from fringe to green or rough to fairway).

The first group will tee off at 6:20 a.m. and the last will tee off no later than 7:20 a.m. If you are at the course before the last group goes off, you will be allowed to play.  Come join us.

Hole in one pool

Today, all players entered the hole in one pool and we had no holes in one. The hole in one pool is now 2,495.50 USD.  A hole in one must be on a par three hole and witnessed by all those in the foursome.  Multiple holes in one in the same event will split the money and the pool is only available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments.

See you on the course,

David Maddox
