February 19, 2008 - CVGA Texas Scramble

Today, the Central Valley Golf Association played a three-person Texas Scramble and we had thirty teams.  Ninety players in a regular Texas Scramble is a new record for our group.  Only twice have we had more players join us (December 2006- 103 players and December 2007- 100 players).

In today’s event, two opposing teams played together to insure that the rules were followed, the minimum numbers of drives per player (five) were met, and the proper scores were recorded.

Our new beverage girls now have cute uniform shirts, compliments of Mac’s American Bar and Texas BBQ.  They are still learning the course but did a very good job for us today.

Net scores ranged from –12.0 to +4.5, and the best gross scores were one –11, two –8’s, three –7’s, and three –6’s.  Less than two net strokes separated the nine top teams.

Today’s results (gross, net, and points towards team of the year) are:

 1st- Kick-Ass Coffee (-11, -12.0, 150 points)

2nd- Chilangos (-8, -12.0 but lost tiebreaker on back nine, 90 points)

3rd- Time-Out (-8, -11.8, 80 points)

4th- Viagra (-7, -11.7, 70 points)

5th- Cuban Boys (-7, -11.3, 60 points)

6th- Banditos (-6, -11.1, 50 points)

7th- A Team (-7, -11.1 but lost tiebreaker on back nine, 40 points)

8th- Lowther’s Team (-6, -10.4, 30 points)

9th- Tool Town (-6, -10.2, 20 points)

10th- Golfitenos (-5, -9.2, 10 points)

All other teams received ten points towards “team of the year”.  Each member of the first place team was awarded a free round of golf, compliments of Valle Del Sol.  Each member of the second place team received a voucher for an Executive Lunch, compliments of Tony Romas.  The third, fourth and fifth place teams also received a voucher for a free lunch at one of our sponsors (Big Dog’s, Wendy’s, Mac’s American Bar, Time-Out, Tequila Joe’s and/or Rock & Roll Pollo).

Thanks for a very nice day

While we had a larger than expected group today, we were still able to start on time.  Thanks to Mike Hawkins and Norman Sklar for helping me out.  We had thirty teams and only eleven starting holes, so we had to have four a & b holes.  However, once we got started, the pace of play was very good.  Thanks to all you for a very nice day.

Los Suenos on Thursday, February 28

We have six tee times (space for 24 players) on Thursday, February 28, beginning at 8 a.m.  If you would like to attend, send me an email, call me at 254-0140 or 392-8595, and bring the cash this Tuesday.

The cost is $85.00 per player for unlimited golf and cart for the day and lunch is included. I have to collect the money prior to noon on Tuesday, February 26, and then let Los Suenos know how many of those tee times we will need.

Next week’s format

Tuesday, February 26, we will be playing a modified best ball format (three formats in one).  The first six holes is a two-person scramble (each player must contribute two drives), the second six holes is a two-person best ball, and the final six holes is a two-person Chapman (alternate shot) format.  For more information about this format, please visit www.TheCVGA.com and click on “the games we play”.

In this format, you can choose your own partner but the twelve-stroke rule is in effect.  This tournament will be flighted and 30% of the combined team handicap will be used as a reduction of your gross score.  As always, the first group will go off #1 at 6:15 a.m. and the last foursome will tee off no later than 7:20 a.m.

Damas Israelitas Charity Tournament

On Friday, March 7, there is a charity tournament at the Cariari.  The cost per player is $100 and there will be a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m.  This will be a three-person scramble and breakfast is included. A hole in one on a selected hole wins a Toyota Land Cruiser.

After the tournament there will be a luncheon at the Hotel Intercontinental in Escazu that will start about 2:30 p.m.  There will also be a raffle, which will include a weekend with golf at the Four Seasons, a weekend with golf at Conchal, Continental Airlines tickets, and many other prizes.  Call 382-1573 for more information.

Ronald McDonald Foundation Tournament

On Saturday, March 1, there is a charity tournament at Los Suenos.  The cost per player is $150 and there will be a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m.  This will also be a three-person scramble.  Please contact www.golflaiguana.com or call 630-9012 for more information.

Hole in one pool

Today, all players were automatically entered in the pool and we had no holes in one. The hole in one pool is now 2,405.50 USD.  A hole in one must be on a par three hole and witnessed by all those in the foursome.  Multiple holes in one in the same event will split the money and the pool is only available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments.

See you on the course,

David Maddox
