GOLF QUOTE

A "gimme" can best be defined as an agreement between two golfers, neither of whom can putt very well.

February 05, 2008 - Modified Stableford

Thanks to Calix and Mike Daughtry for running Tuesday’s tournament while I was in the States.  We had forty-two (42) players in attendance and there were twenty-one players in each flight.

The results (gross, stableford points above target, and points towards POTM and POTY) are:

 A Flight

 1st- Sandi Wagner (77, +14, 6 points)

2nd- Bob Sims (73, +7, 4 points)

3rd- Pat Corrigan (85, +6, 3 points)

4th- Norman Sklar (84, +5, 2 points)

5th- Agustin Odio (78, +3, 1 point)

Others: +3 but lost tiebreaker to –6

B Flight

 1st- Andee Daughtry (103, +9, 6 points)

2nd- Skip Duranczyk (89, +9 but lost tiebreaker, 4 points)

3rd- Joe Thompson (91, +7, 3 points)

4th- Ida Gorn Ullrich (100+, +6, 2 points)

5th- Dick MacAuley (101, +4, 1 point)

 Others: +3 to –10

Note- our policy for new players (with less than three tournament scores) is to freeze them at three strokes above their target.  Three of our new players actually finished in the top five (one in the A flight and two in the B flight) but were reduced to +3.  My apologies.

Format for this Tuesday

Tuesday, February 12, we will be playing an individual “stableford”.  In a “stableford” your handicap determines the number of strokes (if any) that you get off your gross score on each hole.

In a stableford, a net bogey is one point, a net par is two points, a net birdie is three points, a net eagle is four points and a net double eagle is five points.  If you play to your handicap, you should have 36 points at the end of the round.

You can form your own foursomes and begin play as early as 6:15 a.m.  The last group will tee off no later than 7:20 a.m.  If you are at the course before the last group goes off, you will be able to play.

February 19 is the next Texas Scramble

Tuesday, February 19, is the second Texas Scramble of 2008.  This will be a three-person scramble, requiring FIVE drives per player.  There will be a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m., but you must be there before 7 a.m.

The cost per person is 22 mil (9 mil for players who pay a monthly green fee to Valle Del Sol).  That price will remain in effect for all of 2008 and includes green fees, drinks on the course, four “long drive” holes (and one for the ladies), four “closest to the pin” holes, and the “hole in one pool”.  Carts and caddies are not included.  After the tournament, there will be an “all you eat buffet” (at your cost) at Rock & Roll Pollo in Santa Ana.

As in all Texas Scrambles, two three-person teams will tee off on each hole and scorecards will be exchanged.  It will be up to the opposing teams to insure that all rules, drops and number of drives per person are met, and that the gross scores are properly recorded.

If you are not on an established team, please come anyway.  We are going to have a lot of extra players, looking to form teams.  If you are at the course before 7 a.m., you will be able to play.  If we have an odd number of players, we will have one two-person or one four-person team.  If you have any questions, please call me at 254-0140 or 392-8595.

Los Suenos on February 28

February is a very busy month at Los Suenos, but I have reserved six tee times (space for 24 players) on Thursday, February 28, beginning at 8 a.m.  If you would like to attend, start making plans now.

The cost is $85.00 per player for unlimited golf and cart for the day and lunch is included. I will need to collect the money prior to noon on Tuesday, February 26, and then let Los Suenos know how many of those tee times we will need.

Our arrangement with Los Suenos is a very good deal and we cannot abuse it.  This price is only good for the CVGA members during scheduled tournaments with Los Suenos.  And, as with most golf courses, you will be provided with an ice chest only if you purchase (from them) some drinks for consumption on the course.

Hole in one pool

Tuesday, 42 players entered the hole in one pool.  The pool is now $2,209.00 USD.  A hole in one must be on a par three hole and witnessed by all those in the foursome.  Also, the hole in one pool is only available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments.

See you on the course,

David Maddox
