April 29, 2008 - Individual Modified Stableford

Today, we played an individual modified stableford and we had forty (40) players.  In a modified stableford, each player plays his/her own ball from tee to green.  The handicap of the player determines his/her “target”, and the player’s gross score on each hole determines the number of points he/she receives.  The “target” is 36 minus the player’s handicap.  However, the minimum target of players that have handicaps of 32 or higher is five.  The points awarded for gross scores on each hole are: one for bogey, two for par, four for birdie and eight for eagle.  If you play to your handicap, you should be even at the end of your round.

This tournament was flighted and one-half of the players present were placed in each flight.  The A flight (20 players) had handicaps of 17 or less, while the B flight (20 players) had handicaps of 18 or higher.

Today’s results (gross, stableford points, and points toward POTM and POTY) are:

 A Flight

 1st- Ficklin Bryant (80, +5, 6 points)

2nd- Rob Lowther (75, +4, 4 points)

3rd- Agustin Odio (79, +3, 3 points)

4th- Reinhard Sievert (87, +3 but lost tiebreaker, 2 points)

5th- Jeff McLaughlin (84, +2, 1 point)

Others: +2 but lost tiebreaker to -6

B Flight

 1st- Myles Cunningham (85, +8, 6 points)

2nd- Bruce Page (91, +5, 4 points)

3rd- Verena Croci (92, +4, 3 points)

4th- Lynne Ferguson (96, +4 but lost countback, 2 points)

5th- John Snyder (89, +3, 1 point)

Others:  +3 but lost tiebreaker to -7

Yesterday’s tournament results at the Cariari

Occasionally, we receive a special invitation to play the Cariari Country Club.  Yesterday, Monday, April 28, twenty-two of us played an individual modified stableford at their fine course.  That tournament was not flighted and no points were awarded for player of the month and player of the year.

The results were:

 1st- Jason Davidson +4

2nd- Dick MacAuley +4 but lost tiebreaker on back nine holes

3rd- Albert Burgess +1

4th- Rob Lowther even

5th- Joe Thompson even but lost tiebreaker on back nine holes

Next week’s format

Tuesday, May 6, we will be playing a two-person scramble, using 30% of the team handicap as a reduction of your gross score.  Using the team handicaps, the tournament will be flighted (one-half in the “A” and one-half in the “B” flight).

You may choose your own partner but he/she must be within twelve strokes of the lower handicap player (or the higher handicap player will be adjusted downward to within twelve strokes).  Each player must contribute three drives per side.  Please remember that the scramble rules have changed.  The person whose ball is selected must play that ball first, as it lies on the course.  The partner may then place his/her ball within one scorecard, but must remain in the same cut of grass (no going from fringe to green or rough to fairway).

The first group will tee off at 6:20 a.m. and the last will tee off no later than 7:20 a.m. If you are at the course before the last group goes off, you will be allowed to play.  Come join us.

 Your pace of play

Your position on the course is directly behind the group in front of you, NOT directly in front of the group behind you.  Have your glove on, your yardage determined, be out of your cart with club in hand so you can make your shot when you can safely do so.  Play “ready golf” and do not fall a hole behind.  Our players would appreciate it.

 Hole in one pool

Today, all players entered the pool and there were no holes in one.  The pool for next week is now $676.00 USD.  A hole in one must be on a par three hole and witnessed by all those in the foursome.  Also, the hole in one pool is only available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments.

Player of the Month, April 2008

Ficklin Bryant is the POTM for April 2008.  He had fourteen points, followed by Rob Lowther with eleven points.  The player of the month receives a free round of golf, compliments of Valle Del Sol.  Congratulations, Fick.

May 1 is a holiday

Thursday, May 1, is a national holiday.  You will need a tee time, the weekend green fee rate will be in effect, and no monthly members will be allowed to play until 10:30 a.m.

Tuesday, May 13, is the Texas Scramble

Tuesday, May 13, 2008, is our fourth Texas Scramble (formerly known as the bar tournament) of 2008.  This will be a three-person scramble, requiring FIVE drives per player.  There will be a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m., but you must be there before 7 a.m.  After the tournament we will meet at Rock & Roll Pollo in Santa Ana and there will be an “all you can eat” buffet with chicken, ribs and sausage (at your expense).

The cost per person is 22 mil (9 mil if you are a paid monthly member of VDS) and includes green fees, drinks on the course, four long drive holes (and one for the ladies), four closest to the pin holes, and the hole in one pool.  Carts and caddies are not included.

Two three-person teams will tee off on each hole and scorecards will be exchanged.  It will be up to the opposing teams to insure that all of the rules, drops and number of drives per person are met, and that the gross scores are properly recorded.  Also, please remember that we do not like slow play.  Check your yardage on the way to your ball and do not get more than one hole behind.

If you are not on an established team, please come anyway.  We are going to have a lot of extra players, looking to form teams.  If you are at the course before 7 a.m., you will be able to play.  If we have an odd number of players, we will have one two-person or one four-person team.

 Charity tournaments in May

Friday, May 16, is the Copa Panama Faco tournament at the Cariari Country Club. This will be a three-person scramble and the cost per player is $125.00.  There will be a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. and carts are not included.  There will be a lunch and raffle after the tournament.  Contact Jetzy (8391-0257), Mariana (8380-2542) or Agustin (8382-8722) for more information.

Sunday, May 18, is the Escazu Rotary Club “Hermanas de Magdala” tournament at Valle Del Sol.  This will be a two-person best ball format and the cost per player is $100.00.  Bernhard Croci is organizing this tournament (8876-1931) and the entry fee includes cart, driving range, lunch and many raffle prizes also.

See you on the course,

David Maddox
