April 22, 2008 - Individual Stableford

Today, the Central Valley Golf Association played an individual stableford and we had forty-two (42) players. In a “stableford” your handicap determines the number of strokes (if any) that you get off your gross score on each hole. In a stableford, a net bogey is one point, a net par is two points, a net birdie is three points, a net eagle is four points and a net double eagle is five points.  If you play to your handicap, you should have 36 points at the end of the round.

This tournament was flighted and the A flight (21 players) had handicaps 17 and under while the B flight (also 21 players) had handicaps 18 and higher.

Today’s results (gross score, points over 36 and points towards “player of the month” and “player of the year”) are:

A Flight

 1st- Sandi Wagner (76, +6, 6 points)

2nd- Rob Lowther (72, +5, 4 points)

3rd- Enrique Gamboa (77, +5 but lost tiebreaker, 3 points)

4th- Ficklin Bryant (80, +5 but lost tiebreaker, 2 points)

5th- Nick Costas (82, +4, 1 point)

 Others:  +3 to –8

B Flight

 1st- Aideen Kellaghan (86, +6, 6 points)

2nd- Bruce Kniegge (95, +4, 4 points)

3rd- Ida Ullrich (104, +2, 3 points)

4th- Ryan Donahue (100+, +2 but lost tiebreaker, 2 points)

5th- Andee Daughtry (104, +1, 1 point)

Others: +1 but lost tiebreaker to –9

Cariari on Monday, April 28

The Cariari Country Club has extended an invitation for twenty-four of us to play their course on Monday, April 28.  We have six tee times, beginning at 7 a.m.  Thus far, nineteen players have signed up.

We have space for five more players and you need to call me soon (8392-8595) if you want to play.  The cost is $60 per player and I have to notify the Cariari of the names of the players (and pay the entry fee) prior to Monday. The format will be an individual modified stableford and the entry fee is 4 mil colones (no hole in one pool).

The Cariari is a private club and we are their guests.  Dress appropriately and please respect their members, rules and regulations.

Format for Tuesday, April 29

Tuesday, April 29, we will be playing an individual modified stableford.  This is an excellent format for our new and/or higher handicap players. You can have some high scores on several holes, but still play well enough to compete and win.

In a modified stableford, your handicap determines your target.  A gross bogey is one point, a gross par is two, a gross birdie is four and a gross eagle is eight points.  Once you have a gross double-bogey, you cannot score a point on that hole.  You can pick up, or finish the hole (as long as you are not slow playing).  If you are a 20 handicap then your target is 16 points (36-20=16).  However, the minimum target for players with handicaps of 32 to 36 will be five points. This tournament will be flighted and the top five scores in each flight will receive points towards player of the month and player of the year.  All new players that have less than three tournament scores will be frozen at +3 points.

Please be there by 7 a.m.  Since this is an individual competition you are free to make your own foursome.  The first group will go of #1 at 6:20 a.m. and the last team will go off no later than 7:20 a.m.

 DHL tournament results

Last Friday, DHL had a great tournament at the Cariari.  A team of three of our players won the event.  Congratulations to Agustin Odio, Joe “Chou” Thompson, and Ariel Zapata.

Player of the month standing for April

Next Tuesday’s results will determine the Player of the Month for April.  Ficklin Bryant has eight points; Rob Lowther has seven points, followed by eight others (Kendall, O’Connor, Hopwood, Luedke, Rowlands, Sharad, Wagner and Kellaghan) with six points each.  Nine others have four points.  The POTM receives a free round of golf, courtesy of Valle Del Sol.

Restrictions on VDS monthly members

Christian Morera wanted me to advise all monthly members (not just CVGA) that you will not be allowed to tee off before 10:30 a.m. on weekends and holidays.  He said that the rainy season is causing weekend clients to book earlier tee times.

Charity tournaments in May

Friday, May 16, is the Copa Panama Faco tournament at the Cariari Country Club. This will be a three-person scramble and the cost per player is $125.00.  There will be a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. and carts are not included.  There will be a lunch and raffle after the tournament.  Contact Jetzy (8391-0257), Mariana (8380-2542) or Agustin (8382-8722) for more information.

Sunday, May 18, is the Escazu Rotary Club “Hermanas de Magdala” tournament at Valle Del Sol.  This will be a two-person best ball format and the cost per player is $100.00.  Bernhard Croci is organizing this tournament (8876-1931) and the entry fee includes cart, driving range, lunch and many raffle prizes also.

As I get more information on each, I will pass it on to you.  These are two nice tournaments that our players should support.

Hole in one pool

Today, all forty-two players entered the pool and there were no holes in one.  The pool for next week is now $616.00 USD.  A hole in one must be on a par three hole and witnessed by all those in the foursome.  Also, the hole in one pool is only available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments.

See you on the course,

David Maddox
