April 15, 2008 - Two Person Modified Best Ball

Today’s format for the Central Valley Golf Association was a two-person modified best ball and we had forty-four (44) players. A modified best ball is actually three formats in one.  The first six holes is a two-person scramble (each player must contribute two drives), the second six holes is a two-person best ball, and the final six holes is a two-person Chapman (alternate shot) format.

In this format, players could choose their own partner but the twelve-stroke rule was in effect.  This tournament was flighted and 30% of the combined team handicap was used to determine the net score of each team.  As always, one-half of the teams are placed in each flight. The A flight (eleven teams) had team handicaps of 9.6 or less, while the B flight (also eleven teams) had team handicaps of 10.2 or more.

Today’s results (gross, net, and points for POTM and POTY) are:

 A Flight

1st- Eirig Rowlands and Steve Poznanski (72, -9.6, 6 points each)

2nd- Roy Vargas and Phil Franz (67, -8.6, 4 points each)

3rd- Rob Lowther and Adi Tarkay (71, -7.6, 3 points each)

 Others: -6.8 to –3.2

B Flight

1st- Ficklin Bryant and Paul Sharad (74, -7.0, 6 points each)

2nd- George Alencastro and Mike Wallace (77, -3.4, 4 points each)

3rd- Jeff McLaughlin and Jason Feinman (80, -2.2, 3 points each)

Others: -1.1 to +4.2 and one DNF

Next week’s format

Tuesday, April 22, we will be playing an individual “stableford”.  In a “stableford” your handicap determines the number of strokes (if any) that you get off your gross score on each hole.

In a stableford, a net bogey is one point, a net par is two points, a net birdie is three points, a net eagle is four points and a net double eagle is five points.  If you play to your handicap, you should have 36 points at the end of the round.

You can make your own foursomes and begin play as early as 6:15 a.m.  The last group will tee off no later than 7:20 a.m.  If you are at the course before the last group goes off, you will be able to play.

 Cariari on Monday, April 28

The Cariari Country Club has invited us to play their beautiful course on Monday, April 28.  I have six tee times, beginning at 7 a.m.  The cost is $60 per player and I will need to collect the money prior to Friday, April 25. We will still be having our regular Tuesday tournament at Valle Del Sol on the 29th.

The format will be an individual modified stableford and the entry fee is 4 mil colones (no hole in one pool).  If you are a member of Cariari and you want to play with us, then send me an email or call me at 2254-0140 or 8392-8595.  You will only have to pay the entry fee.

Please remember that each time you play in any CVGA event (including Cariari and Los Suenos) you receive credit for one ticket for the year-end raffle.  To qualify for any grand prize (airline tickets, golf bags, golf clubs, etc), you will need to have played with us at least eight times during our fiscal year.

Charity tournaments in May

Friday, May 16, is the Copa Panama Faco tournament at the Cariari Country Club. This will be a three-person scramble and the cost per player is $125.00.  There will be a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. and carts are not included.  There will be a lunch and raffle after the tournament.  Contact Jetzy (8391-0257), Mariana (8380-2542) or Agustin (8382-8722) for more information.

Sunday, May 18, is the Escazu Rotary Club “Hermanas de Magdala” tournament at Valle Del Sol.  This will be a two-person best ball format and the cost per player is $100.00.  Bernhard Croci is organizing this tournament (8876-1931) and the entry fee includes cart, driving range, lunch and many raffle prizes also.

As I get more information on each, I will pass it on to you.  These are two nice tournaments that our players should support.

Hole in one pool

Today we had 42 players in the pool and there were no holes in one.  The pool for next week is now $553.00 USD.  A hole in one must be on a par three hole and witnessed by all those in the foursome.  Also, the hole in one pool is only available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments.

See you on the course,

David Maddox
