April 08, 2008 - Two-person Best Ball

Today’s format for the Central Valley Golf Association was a two-person best ball and we had fifty-six (56) players. In our best ball format, each player plays his/her own ball from tee to green, using 100% of his/her handicap as a reduction on each hole (if applicable).  The better net score of the two partners is recorded on each hole. In this format, players were able to choose their own partner, but the twelve-stroke rule was in effect.  This tournament was flighted.  The A flight (fourteen teams) had combined handicaps of 34 or less, while the B flight (also fourteen teams) had combined handicaps of 36 or more.

Today’s results (net score and points for POTM and POTY) are:

A Flight

1st- Arturo O’Connor and John Kendall (-14, 6 points each)

2nd- Ariel Zapata and Joe Thompson (-12, 4 points each)

3rd- David Tomko and J.D. DeLuca (-11, 3 points each)

Others: -11 but lost tiebreaker to -5

B Flight

1st- Bryan Hopwood and Gary Luedke (-12, 6 points each)

2nd- Julio Petra and Juan Carlos Rojas (-11, 4 points each)

3rd- Larry Goldman and Bruce Page (-11 but lost tiebreaker, 3 points each)

 Others: -10 to -2

Los Suenos on Thursday, April 17

We have six tee times (space for 24 players) on Thursday, April 17, beginning at 8 a.m.  If you would like to attend, send me an email or call me at 2254-0140 or 8392-8595, and then pay the green fee by Tuesday, April 15.

The cost is $85.00 per player for unlimited golf and cart for the day and lunch is included. I have to collect the money prior to noon on Tuesday, April 15, and then let Los Suenos know how many of those tee times we will need.

 Next week’s format

Tuesday, April 15, we will be playing a modified best ball format (three formats in one).  The first six holes is a two-person scramble (each player must contribute two drives), the second six holes is a two-person best ball, and the final six holes is a two-person Chapman (alternate shot) format.  For more information about this format, please visit www.TheCVGA.com and click on “the games we play”.

In this format, you can choose your own partner but the twelve-stroke rule is in effect.  This tournament will be flighted and 30% of the combined team handicap will be used as a reduction of your gross score.  As always, the first group will go off #1 at 6:15 a.m. and the last foursome will tee off no later than 7:20 a.m.

Charity tournaments in May

Friday, May 16, is the Copa Panama Faco tournament at the Cariari Country Club. This will be a three-person scramble and the cost per player is $125.00.  Agustin Odio is helping organize the tournament.

Sunday, May 18, is the Escazu Rotary Club “Hermanas de Magdala” tournament at Valle Del Sol.  This will be a two-person best ball format and the cost per player is $100.00.  Bernhard Croci is organizing this tournament (8876-1931) and the entry fee includes cart, driving range, lunch and many nice raffle prizes also.

As I get more information on each, I will pass it on to you.  These are two nice tournaments that our players should support.

Hole in one pool

Today we had 55 players in the pool and there were no holes in one.  The pool for next week is now $490.00 USD.  A hole in one must be on a par three hole and witnessed by all those in the foursome.  Also, the hole in one pool is only available in our Valle Del Sol tournaments.

See you on the course,

David Maddox
